Humayun’s Tumb

On Monday morning, we hopped into a minibus for a visit of the tomb of Humayun, the second Mughal Emperor of India. The site was built between 1565-72 A.D. We were guided by Dr. Sanjay, also specialized in Ayurvedic healing. The tomb is a garden-tomb, the first of its kind on the Indian subcontinent.

After lunch, we headed to the Qutab complex, the center of power during the eleventh to thirteenth century A.D. and a landmark in Indo-Islamic architecture. There, we understood the warnings we were given coming to India as foreigners. We were quickly surrounded by young men, some taking pictures of us incessantly. If I did not mind the picture-taking in essence, the insisting looks on the youngest females of our group and the invasion of our personal space with men gathering around us to watch us closely, clearly made the situation uncomfortable. We tried to remember we were on this trip to study peace and nonviolence…

We headed back to rest and eat in the comfort of our air-conditioned hotel.
